The YouTube Generation

26 February, 2008

YouTube has a lot to answer for, including making celebrites out of ordinary people. You may have caught these guys on Lily Allen’s show over the weekend performing their Barbie Girl number.

These two guys from Derby, Chris Green & Jake Walmsley have made themselves famous for lipsyncing to records on video, then uploading them to YouTube. To date their video presentations are amongst the most watched videos on YouTube.

I think it’s fantastic that these guys, who so obviously want to be famous, have made their own fame. It’s the perfect indicator to today’s society that two young guys, with no real talent than good video editing skills, and an obvious ease infront of the camera, can make themselves famous worldwide.

I can imagine these guys being offered their own TV show, but then again, why would they? They already have a far greater audience than any national TV station could give them.

Do they want, or need,  a sponsor who’ll pay them, instead of doing it all for free? Is their independence and amateur status the very thing that has appealed to their audience and given rise to their fame? If they began to churn out videos to order, would they loose their quirky, boys next door having a larf image. I suspect the latter is true, they have to be careful not to become victims of their own success, appearing on TV as special guests alongside hollywood actors is a start down the path to the dark side. I have also heard that the boys,  after several mainstream magazine interviews, have been signed up by Nigel Martin-Smith, Take That’s former manager.

Oh, and just in case you’re wondering, the guys state categorically and emphatically that they are definately NOT gay! So that’s clear then.

I think they’re setting out to be the next Ant and Dec – they’re always on the same side of the picture, there’s your clue.
I think they’re brilliant and i think I could be in love with both of them, so it’s a jolly good job that they’re not gay or anything, isn’t it?
