The Fruit Machine

3 July, 2007

3342674m.jpgJuly 16th sees the Region 2 DVD release of ‘The Fruit Machine’ directed by Philip Saville. The film follows the fortunes of two teenage gay boys who witness a brutal crime and then go on the run in fear of their lives. The film is camp and almost unremarkable save for the appearance of Robbie Coltrane (Harry Potter’s Hagrid) as Annabelle in a yellow and white checked gingham dress.

The film, made in 1988, hasn’t worn too well, but it’s worth watching just for Robbie Coltrane’s portrayal of a transvestite club owner of the film’s name. The film was originally released in the US under the name of ‘Wonderland’. Read The Washington Post’s 1989 review here by Hal Hinson.

If anything it’s a lazy Sunday afternoon kind of movie. Make sure you have plenty of popcorn!
